Post Office MIS (Monthly Income Scheme): Interest and Calculator

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) pays interest every month. Single account maximum is ₹9 lakh; joint account (up to 3 adults) maximum is ₹15 lakh. Tenure is 5 years. The interest rate is set by the government (e.g. 7.4% p.a.) and is taxable. Only resident Indians can open an account.

Premature closure is allowed after 1 year with a deduction (2% before 3 years, 1% before 5 years). On maturity you get back the principal; interest is already paid monthly. No partial withdrawal—only full closure.

Use our Post Office MIS Calculator to see monthly interest and total interest over 5 years. The calculator page has full Q&A on opening and closing.
